The chief executive of Dublin City Council has described how “scavengers” are rummaging through bins to collect bottles or cans for return purposes, reports Breaking News.

Richard Shakespeare stressed that local authority teams are carrying out clean-ups as frequently as they can manage, reports Breaking News.

He pointed out that this issue regularly occurs along his usual route from the Mansion House to George’s Street.

Shakespeare explained that Dublin City Council plans to request financial support from Re-Turn to cover the additional cleaning expenses, reports Breaking News.

Speaking on Newstalk, he said: “That extra cleaning piece, it probably means I have an extra 10 people on the streets at any given point in time to react to that. And when I look at the cost of the 10 people, it is anywhere between half a million and a million, depending,” reports Breaking News.

Re-Turn responded that it had not been made aware of these costs previously and expressed willingness to discuss the issue further, reports Breaking News.
