The Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has said that the scenes of violence at the US Capitol are deeply concerning.
In a tweet posted this evening, Coveney said that the actions of those responsible shocking and deeply saddening.
He went onto say the scenes must be called what they are which is a deliberate assault on democracy by a sitting US President and his supporters.
He added that we hope for restoration of calm.
