The scientific community is sounding the alarm this evening about the Beta variant.
First detected in South Africa, it has now spread to 132 countries. Scientists believe this variant is more resistant to vaccines.
Globally, the Delta variant has become dominant, however. This variant is reportedly 40-60% more transmissible, though there is no consensus about whether or not it is more dangerous than other strains.
