Covid-19: Bishop calls for “family only funerals” during coronavirus outbreak

The Bishop of Limerick, Brendan Leahy, has called for “family only funerals” during the awful coronavirus outbreak. Bishop Leahy has pleaded with people not to attend funerals, as difficult as that may be, unless they are immediate family or very close friends of the deceased during the outbreak of coronavirus.

Speaking on RTE News, Bishop Leahy said:
“It is going to be well nigh-on impossible to keep social distancing going in this situation, and we might well be contributing to the spread of the virus.”

“There are other ways people can express their condolences to the family of the deceased, such as emails, texts or WhatsApp messages.”

He has asked families to specifically state when writing the death notice of their loved one, that the funeral is private and is family only due to the coronavirus outbreak.
