The R-number reflects the average number of people that an infected individual passes the infection to. It stood at 0.5 last week, but has climbed steeply to 0.9 in recent days.
Health authorities generally agree that this number must be kept below 1 to maintain relatively control over the outbreak. To put this in perspective, the number was 3.5-4 at the start of the crisis.
