A leading professor has said that he believes that children should be vaccinated against Covid-19 upon returning to school.
Speaking to Newstalk, University College Cork Professor of Immunovirology Liam Fanning, said that he believes that vaccinating children will offer the country greater protection.
Fanning told the station that children can get co-infected from SARS-CoV-2 and common viruses such as RSV and this could potentially become a management issue as both viruses show similar symptoms.
The Immunovirology professor also said that given we as a society have close knit families, it would be beneficial for children to be vaccinated as it would reduce transmission to others.
Fanning said that he would like to see 12 to 16 year olds vaccinated first and then so on.
He added that in order to have maximum protection against the virus we must vaccinate as many people as possible.
