Researchers in Denmark have calculated that a staggering 129 billion plastic case masks are discarded every month around the world since the outbreak of Covid-19.
According to the Metro, these masks have a dangerous environmental impact. The researchers, from the University of Southern Denmark can’t say what that is yet because there’s insufficient data.
The problem with single use face masks is that the plastic microfibres are not biodegradable. As they rot, the microfibres just get smaller and smaller and make their way into the oceans, lakes and soil.
Remember when personal hygiene companies were getting lambasted for producing micro, non biodegradable products that were ending up in the seas around the world?
Well that’s literally just a drop in the ocean when we take the environmental impact of single use face masks into account.
