Crackdown: Gardai to increase nationwide checkpoints and speed gun checks over Easter weekend

Gardai will be out in force across the country this bank holiday Easter weekend.

Road safety authorities have once again urged drivers to refrain from using their mobile phones while at the wheel, after it emerged that Gardai caught almost 5,000 motorists doing so in recent times.

Statistics show that using a mobile phone while driving increases the likelihood of an accident four-fold.

If caught, drivers face three penalty points and a €60 fine.

Meanwhile already this week, two people have sadly died on our roads. One social media user said:
“Shane Ross might as well not be in a job with the little good he appears to be making in terms of roads death number.”

“Drink driving ban made no difference, if anything more people are dying on the roads and it’s not to do with speed, it’s to do with bad driving in many cases”.
