Customers will start to be paid their first €200 energy credit from today

The first of the three electricity credits of 200 euros will appear on the residential bill starting today.

The government said that more than 2.2 million accounts will benefit from the initiative.

The Series of Electricity Credits is a government plan designed to cushion the blow of rising energy prices.

From early November through December, the first energy credit will appear on customers’ bills; however, the actual date depends on the electricity provider and the household’s billing cycle.

The invoice credit line will show €183.49, which amounts to €200 if VAT is taken into account.

Environment Minister Eamon Ryan said the credit will be applied automatically and will include both bill payments and pay-as-you-go customers.

The second and third installments will be paid in January/February and March/April.

Ryan said the government is well aware of the difficulties people are facing this winter and said this kind of financial support is necessary and helpful.

However, opposition parties have said the government is not doing enough, with Sinn Féin calling for the introduction of a power cap to better protect struggling customers.
