New regulations planned to be introduced by summer’s end will see cyclists fined €50 for breaking red lights or violating other rules of the road.

Under current laws, a Garda can stop a cyclist, take their name and other details, and threaten them with a court appearance.

The new rules are hoped to act as a deterrent and ensure cyclists abide by the rules as any other road user.

12 cyclists were killed on the roads last year, seven more than the previous year.
