The Government is set to approve regulations to remove one and two cent coins from circulation nationwide.
The coins cost more to mint than they are worth, and after a successful trial run in Wexford, the Government will reportedly roll out the plan to remove the coins altogether.
During the trial, retailers rounded the transaction to the nearest five cent. Five other EU member states, including Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Hungary, already have a rounding policy in effect.
It costs 1.65c to mint each one cent coin and 2.07c to mint each two cent coin.
