Verona Murphy has declared that she “fully intends to continue to carry out” her duties as Ceann Comhairle, despite mounting pressure to resign following her management of a tumultuous Dáil session on Tuesday.

On Tuesday evening, a chorus of opposition leaders—including Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald, Labour’s Ivana Bacik, the Social Democrats’ Cian O’Callaghan, Independent Ireland’s Michael Collins, People Before Profit’s Richard Boyd Barrett, and Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman—refused to express confidence in Murphy. Their criticism centered on her handling of votes related to the Order of Business and a contentious dispute over speaking rights during the chaotic session.

By Wednesday morning, these opposition figures unanimously agreed that they had lost faith in the Wexford TD, asserting that she could no longer hold her position after the heated clashes in the Dáil. The opposition issued an ultimatum, giving Murphy until the end of the week to step down or face a no-confidence motion.

Tensions flared again in the Dáil on Wednesday afternoon, with Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald leading the charge. Addressing Murphy directly, she stated, as reported by the Irish Mirror: “Yesterday, Taoiseach, you took a sledgehammer to the rules and procedures of the Dáil and you were assisted in this task by the Ceann Comhairle.” She continued, “Ceann Comhairle, not alone have you lost the confidence of the entire opposition, you have, in fact, decimated it and the Dáil cannot function properly whilst you remain in the chair.”

Labour leader Ivana Bacik echoed this sentiment, telling the Ceann Comhairle that she had a “duty to apply the rules fairly and impartially” and noting that her party had “agreed to ask you to reflect on your position.” Bacik added, per the Irish Mirror: “If not, if necessary, we will have no option to table a motion of no confidence in you. I regret that it has come to this.”

The opposition’s threatened no-confidence motion is expected to be debated the following Tuesday. Government sources, speaking to the Irish Mirror, indicated that it remains unclear whether the Government will respond with a counter-motion expressing confidence in Murphy.
