The Dáil is set to debate an opposition motion tomorrow that calls for urgent measures to tackle the worsening housing and homelessness crisis, reports RTE.
A Raise the Roof protest is scheduled to take place outside Leinster House at the same time as the debate. The motion is supported by Sinn Féin, Labour, the Social Democrats, PBP-Solidarity, several Independent TDs, and the Green Party.
The proposal urges a significant boost in public housing investment and advocates for tougher taxation on vacant and derelict properties, reports RTE.
It also calls for enhanced protections for private tenants through rent reductions and freezes, and it cautions against any Rent Pressure Zone changes that would result in rent hikes.
The motion is pushing for the return of the ban on no-fault evictions and a full reinstatement of the Tenant in Situ scheme, reports RTE.
Sinn Féin’s Eoin Ó Broin said the protest tomorrow marks the beginning of a nationwide series of rolling demonstrations.
Labour TD Conor Sheehan shared that there is anecdotal evidence suggesting landlords have increased rents following the Government’s reforms to the Rent Pressure Zones, which he criticized as incoherent and confusing, reports RTE.
