The head of Ireland’s National Virus Laboratory Dr Cillian De Gascun has said that the South African variant of Covid-19 found in the country has been contained.
Speaking to RTE, De Gascun said that hr believes the new variant which was found on Friday has had no onward transmission as the cases involved have been controlled, contained and the properly contact traced.
It is believed that the new variant came into the country after people travelled to the country from South Africa over the Christmas period.
He added that to the best of his knowledge there has been no onward transmission.
