Exhausted nurse’s message goes viral depicting the true reality of the pandemic in Irish hospitals

A Drogheda based nurse’s Facebook post has gone viral after she wrote a candid message about just how bad things have gotten in Irish hospitals.

Eadaoin O Callaghan works as a nurse in the emergency department of Our Lady Of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda, Co. Louth. The young nurse posted a selfie of herself, quite clearly looking exhausted from her shift, and made many people sit up and pay attention to the startling reality of what she and her work colleagues face on a daily basis.

She starts by declaring:
“This is me. This is me during a 12 and a half hour shift on my second breakdown of the day. I never cry in work or about work but today was one of my worst days in my career to date.”

She continues with:
“We were overcrowded in the COVID area – patients sitting on chairs, trolleys, people sitting in every free space possible, patients sitting out by doors, on corridors, ambulance crew coming in with patients on stretchers with knowehere to put them, patients coming in with Shortness of breath – no cubicle to put them in.”

Eadaoin said that she understands how hard the restrictions are on people:
“I understand its very hard to listen to the information of ‘stay home’ and ‘isolate’ but look at it this way, when you make the decisions you do, everyone is effected. Is it your granny you want to see in our overcrowded Emergency Department with possibly no ideal place for her to go? Your neighbour? Your Dad? Your pregnant wife? Your best friend? Your child? Is it these people you want in here with us?”

She concludes:
“Please if anything listen to the advice and keep your people safe. This is no joke. This is happening around us now.”
