Death of babies at Portiuncula Hospital ignored for months

Authorities at Portiuncula Hospital did not discuss the death of babies from lack of oxygen until several months after they occurred. Two babies died in Portiuncula between February and November, but a meeting was not held to deal with the issue until December.

The hospital did conduct a review in November but failed to contact the parents of deceased babies and five other babies who had suffered from lack of oxygen. The babies who survived may have suffered brain damage, but that is not yet known.

An independent inquiry will take place into the failures at the hospital but authorities have said they are confident that there is on ongoing risk to newborns.
