Deferring an increase to toll charges may be considered in budget discussions

The government will consider postponing the toll increase in next year’s budget talks, reports Breaking News.

Transport Minister Jack Chambers said his department was aware of the impact on people already struggling with the cost of living.

Chambers said the government had committed to spending €360m a year on active travel projects, with more money to be spent in the coming years.

He spoke at the official opening of the new Greenway Bridge, completing 108 kilometers of the greenway between Athlone Castle and Maynooth in County Kildare.

In recent days, it has been revealed that from January, M50, M4, M7 and M8 journeys will increase by 20 groszy, and M3 journeys will increase by 10%, reports Breaking News.

However, Mr Chambers said this increase had been mooted.

“The toll increases are linked to the consumer price index. Where the consumer prince index increases with inflation, that’s built in with contracts. However, I recognise as minister that a second toll increase in the space of six months would put many motorists in a difficult position, and I think it will have to form part of the wider budgetary discussions that the Government will be having in the coming weeks,” reports Breaking News.
