Defying the odds: Twin girls born at just 22 WEEKS break hospital record for being the most premature babies to survive

A pair of twins in the US state of Iowa, have defied the odds by surving despite being born four months early.

In a truly remarkable story the twins who are said to have broken the hospital recored for the most premature babies to survive, were born at just 22 weeks gestation.

According to The Daily Mail newspaper, the twins Kambry and Keeley Ewoldt have taken the title of being the most premature surviving twins ever to have been delivered at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The twins were born on the 23rd of November, after they developed twin-twin transfusion syndrome – which is a condition that creates an unusual formation of blood vessels that affects the blood flow between the babies whilst in the womb.

Speaking about the remarkable survival, doctors at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, said the twins remarkable recovery will surely be deemed as a record holder as the chances of survival from birth at 22 weeks are very low.

It is believed that the twins beat the odds of 10% to survive and were no bigger than the size of a dollar bill when they were born.

Speaking to reporters the twins mother Jade, said she was shocked that her water broke back in November and was immediately filled fear and was praying that her baby girls wouldn’t be born at home.

However despite a drive that took over an hour and fifteen minutes to the hospital, Jade managed to make it to the hospital before the girls were delivered.

Doctors treating the babies say they will remain in the neonatal intensive care unit their original due date of March 29th, but they are said to be making great progress.
