Delusional to the bitter end: Former Tanaiste and ex-Labour leader Joan Burton says that JobBridge ‘helped a lot of people’

The woman who presided over the crashing and burning of the Labour party has today stepped up and claimed that the controversial JobBridge scheme ‘helped a lot of people.’

The scheme, which was brought in under Ms. Burton’s auspices, will now be wound down, with no further entrants accepted from this Friday.

Under JobBridge, people would receive €52.50 on top of their social welfare entitlements in exchange for full time devotion to a specific role inside one of the organisations benefitting from the Government-sponsored cheap manpower.

Speaking on the radio, Ms. Burton said “There was certainly a problem with public service employers who took on people because of the public service staff embargo…

“Equally, a number of NGO and voluntary organisations took on interns and again were not really in a position to guarantee them further employment.

“We sought to consciously give people an experience of working in a modern job, and from that empowering the person to go on and work more.”

She added that people against JobBridge often “have no problem with well-off kids whose parents are connected getting their friends to give their child an internship.”
