The Department of Justice have confirmed that a brand new dedicated immigration unit that will include detention facilities will be built at Dublin Airport.
It is reported the new unit which will be operated by the Gardaí will undergo a multi-million euro refurbishment which will see its detention centres upgraded to comply with its EU counterparts.
According to the Office of Public Works construction will officially begin in September and will take just over 10 months complete.
The move to refurbish the facility comes after a number complaints were made by former detainees who heavily criticised the standard of the conditions in the centre.
