Department of the Environment confirm that individual bags will be banned at national level under new bin charges

The Department of the Environment has revealed that the collection of individual bags will be banned at a national level when the new waste charges come into effect later this year.

Under the new ‘pay-by-weight’ scheme set to be introduced this summer, homeowners who do not have a wheelie bin will no longer be able to leave out individual rubbish bags for collection. Although, the Department has said there will be certain exemptions introduce for those living in areas where the surrounding environment prevents collection of wheelie bins (I.e those living in area were an access way is too narrow or too steep), or for those who live in a terrace house with no garden (with little storage space).

In a brief statement a spokesperson for the Department of the Environment said that inaccessible areas will be “determined by local authorities in accordance with guidelines issued by the Department”. In these cases the bags will be exempt from weight charges.
