The Department of Justice has produced a discussion paper on deportation policy, reports Breaking News.

The document outlines the challenges of removing people from Ireland, including those who are deemed “non-returnable” due to severe mental health issues or an inability to determine their nationality.

According to the paper, the removal of whole families from the country is a rare occurrence, as it often attracts negative publicity and political comment.

The document also highlights that deportation cases can be complex and difficult, with many being “painful” and “not always straightforward”, reports Breaking News.

The paper states that there is a significant number of “non-returnables” who cannot be removed from Ireland for various reasons.

The paper said: “Cases such as these can involve mental illness, an inability to identify nationality and on occasion, they can involve serious offences including those of a sexual nature, which attract negative media and public comment,” reports Breaking News.
