Dept of Education spent a whopping €282 million taxpayers’ money on modular accommodation last year

An Oireachtas committee has heard that the Department of Education purchased modular housing for €282 million last year, reports RTE.

Separately, the Committee of Public Accounts (PAC) was informed that the government rented prefabs for €113 million over the previous three years.

Prefabs are rented because, according to Secretary-General Bernie McNally of the Department of Education, “temporary accommodation is sometimes needed” to satisfy the demands of students, reports RTE.

Nonetheless, she stated that it is “encouraged internationally” to utilise modular structures for “permanent accommodation”.

According to Hubert Loftus, head of the department’s Planning and Building Unit, the usage of modular modules is a “strong, robust, permanent solution” that has had “very positive feedback”.

Ms McNally insisted: “We always look at the most sustainable measure possible the most cost-effective measure possible,” reports RTE.
