The City of Derry commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday massacre of civil rights protestors with a remembrance walk that retraced the steps of the original march.

On January 30th 1972 British paratroopers opened fire on unarmed protesters in the Bogside area of Derry shooting 26 people, 13 of whom died that day while a 14th man would die from his wounds four months later.

No soldiers have ever been charged with the atrocity and the British Government is even thought to be intending to announce an end to all legacy investigations which would mean that the families of those who died would ever get justice for their loved ones.

Speaking as he laid a wreath at the Bloody Sunday memorial in Derry, Taoiseach Michael Martin said that there should be no amnesty but that the full process and justice of the law should be used to give the families closure.
