A murderer accused stabbed a fellow inmate in a prison kitchen after an argument over switching TV channels, prosecutors have told a trial jury.

Brian Veale, 31, of Dominic Street, Cork, pleaded not guilty this week to murdering Graham Johnson at Cork Prison on May 16 last year when both men were working in the Kitchen in Cork prison.

The Jury heard that the men were working in the kitchen of Cork Prison when there was “some type of verbal altercation” at around 3pm.

Mr O’Leary said the row started “over a switching of the Racing Channel to Sky Sports News” in the kitchen where the inmates were preparing food for the rest of the prison.

“An altercation appeared to have occurred between the two men in relation to switching channels between a racing channel and Sky Sports News,” he said.

The row eventually to came to an end, but shortly before 5pm, Mr Veale “came across a part of the kitchen with a knife” and stabbed the deceased in the chest area who died from a single stab wound to the front of the chest according to Dr Marie Cassidy.

Veale’s trial continues before Ms Justice Isobel Kennedy and a jury of seven men and five women. It is expected to until early next week.
