Despicable: Suggestions that a possible “bedroom tax” could be used to force old people to downsize their house

It doesn’t get much worse than this.

A good old fashioned Irish solution to an Irish problem. Suggestions were mooted on last night’s Tonight Show on Virgin Media One that a possible “bedroom tax” could be invoked by Fine Gael/Fianna Fail government in an effort to indirectly force old people out of their homes.

The suggestion was put forward by presenter Ivan Yates, who said that’s what’s being talked about in the United Kingdom and he said it’s something that the government could look at here too.

The general idea is to try and basically force old people to downsize and free up their property for younger people with big families to purchase.

Many believe that the idea is very close to socialism, if not communism. Old people who have worked hard all their lives, paid tax and finally get into the property that they desired, may be penalised because their children move out and they now live in a house where there’s empty bedrooms.

There is no confirmation that this is going to happen but judging by what Yates, a former Fine Gael TD said could happen, would indicate that the government are definitely considering it.
