Dirty Old Town – Survey finds litter from PPE is at its highest level since pandemic began

A survey that reviewed the litter situation in 40 of Ireland’s towns and cities has found that Naas is the cleanest when it comes to rubbish being thrown around the streets.

According to RTE, the survey was run by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) and highlighted the fact that the amount of litter throughout the country has risen.  It also found that there is a huge amount of litter from PPE.

The comments about Naas have proved to be a bright spot however, as the survey described the town as “virtually litter free”.  Dublin’s inner city was described as a “litter blackspot” and other areas such as Cork northside and Drogheda were also found to be heavily littered.

Among the types of litter highlighted were coffee cups and alcohol-related litter.

Conor Horgan of IBAL said that there has been an increasing trend where towns and cities have been getting more and more dirty over the past few years.  He also highlighted the fact that there are more disposable blue face masks all over the country, saying:

“People have not moved to reusable masks and people are not taking care of their masks.”

He called on local authorities to get more involved with the problem and to work on reducing litter in areas where it has gotten out of control.
