Discover Ireland: Six of Ireland’s landmark destinations named in Lonely Planets top 500 ‘must see’ places

There are many great attractions on the island of Ireland and six of them have made a very prestigious list as must see destinations for tourists by a top ranking global magazine.

The magazine Lonely Planet have ranked some of Ireland’s historic and memorable heritage sites alongside some of the world’s most prestigious destinations, the magazine has placed 6 of Ireland’s well known monuments in its list of top 500 must see destinations. The world famous Giant’s Causeway in Co Antrim was Ireland’s highest placed destination on the list as it was voted the 103rd must see place.

The rather large list of world famous landmarks and monuments contained 5 other Irish destinations, the historic Bru na Boinne, which is home to the prehistoric monument and passage tombs of Knowth, Newgrange and Dowth, Co Meath, came in at number 224 on the list whilst the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare came in at 378.

Meanwhile the world famous Titanic Belfast, visitor centre also made the list ranked at number 424. The list of Irish destinations was completed by Trinity College Dublin, and the Rock of Cashel in Tipperary.

The latest list was published by a group of Lonely Planet’s travel experts who rated a large number of the world’s most famous heritage sites in order to find the best 500 places to visit. The coveted top spot on the list was taken by the Temples of Angkor which is located in Cambodia and is widely regarded by many as one of the world’s most important archaeological sites.
