For the second day running, a record number of admitted patients are awaiting a seat on trolleys in the Emergency Department and on hospital wards at University Hospital Limerick (UHL), reports RTE.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) reports that 150 patients at UHL are now without a hospital bed. This is the greatest number of patients since the organisation started keeping track of trolley watch lists in 2006.

As of yesterday, there were 138, up from 132 on January 22.

Based on data from the Health Service Executive’s daily Emergency and Urgent care list, at 8 a.m., 103 patients were waiting on trolleys at UHL, 47 in the ED, and 56 more throughout the hospital’s wards, reports RTE.

Of these, 32 were waiting for longer than 24 hours, and 12 of them were 75 years of age or older.

According to the University Hospital Limerick group, minor elective surgeries are being postponed because beds in their day surgery and cardiology wards are being used as part of their surge capacity.

Elective treatments at UHL are assessed on a daily basis due to overpopulation, reports RTE.
