Disgraceful: Gardaí in Dublin close down a stall that gives out food and clothing to the City’s homeless

There is outrage this afternoon as a stall which kindly gives out food to homeless people in Dublin was disgracefully shut down by Gardai recently.

According to various reports it is believed the closure happened when the group named March for the Homeless were handing out food to homeless people on Grafton Street over the weekend. The move has clearly angered group organiser Darren Bradley who spoke to the Herald about the unnecessary closure: “They took volunteers’ names and addresses, which really shocked me, and told them never to come back.” Mr Bradley further explained: “The homeless people were left without food. “If we were selling food I’d understand, because we would need a permit, but we’re giving it away for free.”

Meanwhile a Garda spokesman defended the closure stating that Gardai were called to the incident because a temporary structure was set up and “was attracting a significant amount of people”. The Garda spokesman explained: “Those involved in setting up the structure did not have permits from Dublin City Council and were asked to remove the structures on the grounds that they were causing an obstruction and were a safety concern. “We would ask anyone who wishes to set up structures on streets in the city to liaise with Dublin City Council.”

Meanwhile the Group who are well known for handing out food and clothes to the capital’s homeless have received messages of support from members of the public who have slammed the closure and have called on the government to take action so the stall can be quickly reopened.
