Disgraceful: It’s taken an influx of refugees for the government to implement reform of the “Fair Deal Scheme” which is expected to free up 8000+ family homes

The Fine Fail/Fine Gael coalition government has agreed to change the rules around the rental income on homes covered by the Fair Deal scheme.

The Fair Deal Scheme allows older people to enter Care homes by renting out their own family home.

The Government hopes that the changes will free up to 8,000 homes as part of the efforts to address the housing crisis. However, ot is unknown how many of these new rental homes will be paid for by Irish tax payers to house asylum seekers and refugees.

Following discussions at Cabinet THIS MORNING, the proportion of rental income, which must be paid under the Fair Deal scheme, will be cut from 80% to 40% reports RTE.

In May 2021, the FFG housing minister Darragh O’Brien sought to have an exemption put in place for rental income generated from family homes from contributions to the Fair Deal scheme however his plans were opposed by the Department of Health who claimed the measure could be abused.
