As politicians gear up for a summer off, the least privileged in society see their lifelines cut one by one.
It has emerged today that some disability services provided at St. Augustine’s School in Blackrock have had to be withdrawn altogether due to severe funding cuts.
The institution runs Health Service Executive-funded programmes, including vocational training for older teenagers and well as an after school life skills service for 14 to 16 year olds. The school caters for 162 students with conditions such as autism.
Now, the life skills service is no more, thanks to funding cuts. Also, the vocational training programme will be phased out over the next 24 months.
Both services play a crucial role in helping students with disabilities to cope with the challenges of adult life.
Parents have been swift to voice their dismay at this failed government’s systematic policy of abusing the least privileged in society while striving to maintain the status quo for their caste.
