Do you believe it? The number of new electric cars have increased one third since 2024, says CSO




The number of newly licensed electric cars this year has surged by 34 percent compared to the first seven months of 2024, according to fresh data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), reports Breaking News.

By the end of July, 17,075 new private electric cars had been licensed — over one-third more than the 12,765 registered in the same timeframe in 2024.

The CSO’s month-on-month data showed a 64 percent increase, with 3,973 electric vehicles (EVs) registered in July 2025, up from 2,421 in July of the previous year, reports Breaking News.

EVs made up 17 percent of new private cars licensed between January and July 2025, compared to 14 percent during the same period in 2024.

Licensing of new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in July 2025 rose by 56 percent compared with July 2024 — 3,080 versus 1,974, reports Breaking News.

This has raised the year-to-date share of PHEVs among new private cars from 9 percent to 15 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

The combined share of petrol and diesel cars among new private cars licensed between January and July 2025 declined compared with 2024 (44 percent vs 56 percent).

The data also reveals that the total number of new private cars licensed in July 2025 increased by 8 percent compared with July 2024, rising from 18,512 to 19,923, reports Breaking News.

Licensing of used (imported) cars grew by 17 percent during the same period, from 5,660 to 6,640.

Damien Lenihan, statistician in the transport section of the CSO, said: “Today’s figures from the CSO show a 64 per cent increase in the number of electric cars licensed for the first time in July 2025 when compared with the same month in 2024, reports Breaking News.

“We also saw growth in the licensing of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

“There were 26,454 new petrol cars licensed compared with 30,911 in the same period of 2024, a fall of 14 per cent.

“Comparing the first seven months of 2025 with 2024, the number of new diesel cars licensed decreased by 23 per cent (16,681 vs 21,624), reports Breaking News.

There were 1,614 used (imported) diesel private cars licensed in July 2025, compared with 1,490 in the same period of 2024, a rise of 8 per cent.

“Used private petrol cars licensed decreased by 9 per cent in July 2025 compared with July 2024 (2,799 vs 2,577),” reports Breaking News.

The data also shows Toyota was the top-selling make of new private car licensed in July 2025 with 2,851 vehicles, followed by Volkswagen (2,358), Hyundai (2,142), Skoda (2,093), and Kia (1,524).

These five brands combined accounted for 55% of all new private cars licensed in July 2025, according to the figures, reports Breaking News.

The most popular new electric car licensed in July 2025 was the Volkswagen ID.4 (343), followed by the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (325), and the Kia EV 3 (272).
