Doctor struck off for prescribing vast quantities of addictive drugs

A family physician who gave patients excessive prescriptions for highly addictive medications has been dismissed by the High Court.

According to Breaking News, Dr. Patricia Selvarani Black had her registration revoked by the Irish Medical Council (IMC), a decision that was validated by Mr. Justice Micheál P. O’Higgins. Dr. Black had been practising as a physician in Castletown, County Laois.

She had previously been suspended for violating her agreement with the IMC to stop prescribing these medications.

She had improperly administered benzodiazepines and other medications to three patients while working as a general practitioner in Tallaght, Dublin, several years prior to the dismissal, according to an IMC fitness to practise inquiry.

Breaking News reports that it was determined that the combined claims amounted to professional misconduct. The inquiry noted that the evidence was discovered when a chemist filed a complaint in 2018. It was also noted that she prescribed these medications several times between May and November 2018.
