The billionaire owns Doonbeg golf resort in Co Clare and wishes for the wall to be built on Doughmore Beach to prevent the destruction of the golf resort by the sea.

The limestone wall itself will cost €10m to build, is planned to be 2.8km long and 200,000 tonnes in weight.

Clare County Council are wary of the scale of the wall and the necessity of the wall is being questioned.

Consultants working with Donald Trump have stated “in the medium term, the “do nothing” scenario will bring the viability of the entire resort and its potential closure into question”.

This puts Clare County Council and the people in West Clare in an awkward position as it has been forecast that Clare will see a boost of €38m from 2017-2024 if everything goes as planned.

In 2014 sea eroded the sand dunes at Doonbeg by 6-8 metres, and thus threatens the golf resort.

A decision on whether the wall will go ahead or not is due in April of this year.
