Donegal hotel gets ordered to pay €23,000 to night porter who was fired after giving out to owner’s daughter

A night porter who was dismissed from a Donegal hotel after she reprimanded the owner’s daughter for noisily tapping the front door in an attempt to enter the establishment has been awarded €23,000 in compensation, reports The Mirror.

On April 9, 2023, Coleen Malcolm, the night porter, was wrongfully fired by Glenties Hospitality, the hotel operator, according to a Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) ruling.

Ms. Malcolm, who had been employed by the hotel since September 2018, said that up until the evening of her termination, she had never experienced any problems at work.

She informed the WRC that Patrick Rice, the hotel’s owner, had wished her a good night when he returned to the establishment at one in the morning on April 9, 2023, following some socialising, reports The Mirror.

Ms. Malcolm said that there was a loud, continuous hammering on the main door while he was halfway up the stairs.

She stated there was no need to knock on the door in that manner because the residents were asleep upstairs when she proceeded to open it.

Mr. Rice reprimanded the night porter for his actions, stating that the hotel was empty when he noticed it was his daughter at the door.

Ms. Malcolm said, however, that she had bid farewell to two couples out of the nine rooms that were occupied that evening, along with about eighteen Ukrainian families, reports The Mirror.
