A hotel in Donegal was forced to pay €5,000 to a traveller who was able to make a reservation under a false identity after his own reservation was cancelled because there was no space available, reports Breaking News.
The Mulroy Woods Hotel in Milford, County Donegal, was found to have violated the Equal Status Act 2000 last year when it denied Martin McDonagh a room because he was a member of the Traveller community.
The WRC was informed that two days prior, Mr. McDonagh had used the Booking.com website to reserve multiple rooms at the hotel for himself and his family for the evening of August 20, 2023.
According to Mr. McDonagh, the website verified the reservation, reports Breaking News.
However, he said that at 12.40 p.m. the next day, he received a call from the Mulroy Woods Hotel informing him that they had to cancel his reservation because they were unable to accommodate him for the night.
At 3:30 p.m., Mr. McDonagh said that he attempted to reserve a different room at the hotel using the surname Fitzgerald, which was approved.
Ten minutes later, he contacted the Mulroy Woods Hotel to confirm the reservation and request a cot, reports Breaking News.
According to what the WRC was told, the hotel handled this reservation without any issues, and there was no indication of any overbooking.
According to Mr. McDonagh, around 4:30 p.m., he finished making a reservation for a different family member using that relative’s maiden name, reports Breaking News.
