Donnelly: Some retailers are selling alcohol cheaper than water and that’s not okay

The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has defended the government’s decision to introduce minimum unit pricing on alcohol products.

Speaking about the much talked Bill which will come into effect on January 1st 2022, the Health Minister said that it is being introduced because it has been proven to work.

Donnelly claimed that the new legislation must be introduced as there are some retailers out there selling alcohol products cheaper than water.

The Health Minister went on to say that’s not okay and it is not healthy.

He added that the new Bill will look to cut mortality and hospitalisations as figures show that the number of hospital admissions doubled between 1995 and 2018.
