Don’t be swindled by an online dater: Gardai warn public to be vigilant so they don’t fall prey to romantic fraudsters

Gardai have urged the public to watch out for scammers online as they receive complaints from people who say they were conned out of money by potential partners on online dating sites.

According to the Irish Mirror, the Netflix show “Tinder Swindler” is something that happens all too often in real life, and Gardai are sharing some examples that they hope will keep the public alert.

In one situation, a 51-year-old woman was conned out of €90,000 when she agreed to transfer money so that a male who she met online could use it as a loan for his business.

In another case, a 41-year-old female handed over €26,000 to a male who claimed he was a famous musician.

While Gardai believe that over 70% of fraud victims through romance are women, this isn’t always the case.  They shared the details on one case where a 38-year-old male sent €3,800 to a female so she had the money to come home from Mexico.

The message from Gardai is clear – stay alert, especially if you are asked to give any money for investing and in those cases, get financial and legal advice before committing any money to your online relationship.
