It is thought that the double drowning in Dublin’s Grand Canal occurred as a result of a sad event in which one man fell into the water and another man perished while attempting to save him, reports The Mirror.
In the days preceding the catastrophe, Donal Scanlon, 49, and Alex Warnick, 42, who were homeless, had been sleeping in two tents erected along the Grand Parade waterfront.
Both men perished in the darkness after it is thought that one of them fell into the canal and the other stepped into the water to try to save him.
Although it is known that screaming was heard in the wee hours of Saturday, word of two bodies being found in the water did not surface until about eight in the morning, reports The Mirror.
After being taken from the site, their corpses were sent to the municipal mortuary for postmortems, which will dictate how the investigations are conducted. The men knew each other, and gardai have identified them.
They had set up camp across from a camp for refugees, where those seeking asylum had been billeted.
Donal Scanlon, whose origins are believed to be in County Kerry, has lived in Dublin for a considerable amount of time. Although Alex Warnick is American, he has lived in Ireland for a while, and the two were well-known to homeless agencies, reports The Mirror.
It would be impossible for anyone to escape the canal in the dark, a source informed the Irish Mirror.
He said: “While the canal is not particularly deep where the bodies were found, the bottom is very muddy and there’s a lot of junk and stuff in there. If you waded in you’d sink in the mud and would find it difficult to move. It would be hard enough to get someone out in the day but in the dark it would be near impossible,” reports The Mirror.
