At this week’s UN General Assembly, Taoiseach Simon Harris and Tánaiste Micheál Martin will speak on the conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan, reports Breaking News.
On Sunday, Mr. Harris and Mr. Martin will go to New York for a few days of meetings during the “high-level” week.
On Sunday at UN headquarters, President Michael D. Higgins will speak at the UN Summit of the Future.
Mr. Higgins will reiterate in his speech the significance of food security for Africa and the need for a “invigorated” United Nations, reports Breaking News.
Along with Mr. Harris, Mr. Martin, and other leaders of state and government, Mr. Higgins will also be present during the first day of the yearly high-level general debate on Tuesday.
In addition to co-chairing one of four interactive debates and attending high-level events about the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East, Mr. Harris will be present at the Summit of the Future, reports Breaking News.
Additionally, the Taoiseach will meet one-on-one with a number of other leaders, such as Antonio Guterres, the secretary general of the UN.
Prior to the events, Mr. Harris declared that he would be concentrating “on the grave situation in the Middle East.”
“The immediate priority of the international community must be an immediate ceasefire and hostage release deal. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic. A dramatic scaling up of humanitarian assistance is urgently needed. The safety of UN and other humanitarian workers must be adequately protected. All efforts must be made to prevent escalation in the region and I call on all sides to practise restraint,” reports Breaking News.
