Driver manages to avoid jail after she struck a 75-yr-old while he was crossing the road

A postdoctoral researcher who struck a 75-year-old man one night in January when he was crossing the street without realising it received a three-month suspended sentence, reports Breaking News.

The next day, Megan O’Shaughnessy (32), observed a ding in her Nissan Micra and made contact with the GardaĆ. When she had driven home at 9:45 p.m. the night before, she had originally believed she had hit some debris.

According to testimony given in court, O’Shaughnessy experienced a panic attack after learning from the police that she had hit the guy as he was trying to cross the street.

Later, the man received hospital treatment for his fractured arm and wrist.

For the case, he did not draft a victim impact statement.

On January 27, 2022, O’Shaughnessy, of Turret Road, Palmerstown, Dublin 20, entered a guilty plea at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to reckless driving on Emmet Road, Dublin 8, inflicting severe bodily harm, reports Breaking News.

The car was insured, taxed, and had passed its most recent NCT, and she had no prior convictions.

After analysing O’Shaughnesy’s phone and the car, the gardaĆ were certain that she wasn’t speeding or using her phone when the tragedy happened. On the way home that evening, her speed was consistently judged to be about 45 km/h, reports Breaking News.
