Drivers urged to get prepared for ‘treacherous’ road conditions, says RSA

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is warning all users of the road to be ready for dangerous road conditions due to the anticipated extremely low temperatures and multi-hazardous circumstances, reports Breaking News.

Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary are under an orange snow and ice warning, which is in effect from 5 p.m. on Saturday until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Much of the nation is under a yellow warning for snow and sleet during the same time frame, while the southern regions are also forecast to have a lot of rain, reports Breaking News.

Before leaving, drivers should consider the following advice:

  • Keep in mind that your tires are your sole point of contact with the road, thus it’s critical that they can handle the circumstances in icy and snowy situations;
  • If the tread depth is less than 3 mm, check all of the tires, including the spare wheel, and replace them. Verify that the tires are filled to the proper pressure;
  • Make sure your headlights and taillights are in good operating order and be visible and safe. swap out damaged lightbulbs;
  • Clear the car of any ice and snow buildup;
  • Before you go, clean your windows and mirrors, and bring a screen scraper and deicer. Hot water can break the glass, so avoid using it on the windscreen.
  • Make sure you completely de-mist the interior of your windows. Verify that your anti-icing fluid is full and that your windscreen washer system is operational.
  • Keep sunglasses close at hand to protect yourself from sun glare;
  • Since circumstances might vary greatly, those who are going long distances are urged to examine the weather and road conditions not just where they are starting from but also at their destination and along the trip;
  • Consider if your travel is necessary.
  • Give yourself more time to travel.

According to The Breaking News, the following should be kept in the car’s boot for driving in persistently icy or snowy conditions:

  • Vest with high visibility;
  • Rope for towing;
  • Extra bulbs;
  • Extra gasoline;
  • A shovel
  • Appropriate footwear, such as boots, in the event that you must exit your car;
  • A triangle warning of hazards;
  • Spare wheel (with the tire at the proper tread and pressure).
  • Instead of a spare wheel, certain automobiles could come with an inflation repair kit. Make sure you understand how to utilise it.
  • Equipment for de-icing windows and door locks;
  • First aid kit (well-maintained);
  • An operational torch;
  • Water, snacks, extra clothes, and a vehicle blanket.
