Dublin Bus pays out €7,500 to passenger over alleged homophobic remarks

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC)found that a Dublin Bus driver’s alleged discrimination and harassment was “because of the complainant’s sexual orientation”, reports Gcn.ie

Dublin Bus was ordered to pay out €7,500 in compensation to the gay man despite Dublin Bus stating the passenger had repeatedly paid the wrong fare.

Dublin Bus say their driver challenged the complainant over repeatedly avoiding paying the correct fare. They allege the driver “provoked a grossly exaggerated reaction of outrage” by the complainant who they say has over 75,000 followers on Instagram.

Dublin Bus also alleged the complainant began to repeatedly film and photograph the driver for his social media, labelling the driver a “bully” and homophobic.

The complainant alleges the Dublin Bus driver used words like “faggot”, “schizo” and “queer” when he was getting off the bus.

According to Gcn, Rory McGrath of the WRC, found that “the interactions with the driver took place as described by the complainant.” Dublin Bus were then ordered to pay compensation on behalf of the driver. McGrath added, “from the evidence adduced, particularly in the terms used by the driver, I am satisfied that the alleged discrimination and harassment was because of the complainant’s sexual orientation.”

Management at Dublin Bus have decided not to discipline their driver. The complainant said he is “very happy with the outcome”.
