After an An Garda Siochana member was hurt during a public order disturbance in Dublin’s city centre, a man was taken into custody, reports The Mirror.
During the altercation that occurred on Abbey Street at around 1pm on Saturday, the officer sustained injuries to his arm.
His injuries are said to be non-life-threatening, which is why he was sent to Mater Hospital, reports The Mirror.
In the scene, a man in his late 30s was taken into custody and is presently being held in a Dublin city centre garda station.
In a statement An Garda Siochana said: “Gardai have arrested a man following a public order incident that occurred at Abbey Street, Dublin 1, on Saturday, March 8 at approximately 1pm. During the course of the incident, a member of An Garda Síochána received injuries to his arm, believed to be non-life-threatening at this time. He was taken to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for treatment. A man aged in his late 30s, was arrested at the scene, and is currently detained at a Garda Station in the Dublin City Centre area,” reports The Mirror.
“Garda welfare services will be put in place for the Garda member,” the statement said,” reports The Mirror.
Mark O Meara, president of the GRA, said: “I would just like to wish our injured colleague a speedy recovery in what was an extremely difficult situation,” reports The Mirror.
“Once again this a stark reminder of the dangers our members face on a daily basis while carrying out their duties and protecting the public. Another member also received injuries in the incident and our thoughts are with them both and their families. While it can be rewarding, a career in policing can be an extremely dangerous one and there is never a reason or excuse for attacks and assaults on our members. I commend these colleagues on their bravery and actions today and also any members who find themselves in harms way while policing the frontline,” he added, reports The Mirror.
