Dublin is safe, Helen? Thug jailed for ‘vicious assault’ on American tourists in lift of a Dublin hotel

A man was sentenced to two years in prison for committing “vicious assault” on two American visitors in their late 60s in a Dublin hotel lift while threatening to rape the woman and kill her husband, reports Breaking News.

Sean Dunne, 26, entered a guilty plea to two charges of assault causing hurt against a man and woman on April 7, 2023, at the Ashling Hotel, Parkgate Street, Dublin, according to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Dunne, who lives at St. Catherine’s Foyer on Marrowbone Lane in Dublin, has been convicted ten times for charges such as criminal damage, violating a banning order, and threatening and abusive behaviour, reports Breaking News.

It was a “vicious assault” on a married couple who were travelling from the United States, according to Ms. Justice Sarah Berkeley.

In addition to backdating the sentence to April 2023 for time spent in detention, she gave Dunne a two-and-a-half-year term with the last six months suspended.

The Garda On the night in question, Stephen Lawlor informed prosecutor Michael Horrigan BL that he was on mobile patrol. Shortly after nine o’clock at night, he got a call regarding an alleged attack, reports Breaking News.

When he got to the hotel, he noticed a man—later identified as Dunne—being held down on the floor of the hallway. He saw blood on the carpet, too.

According to what the court heard, Dunne was taken into custody, given a warning, and put in a garda vehicle. The two wounded persons, a sixty-year-old American couple, were interviewed by the Gardaí. They claimed to have eaten supper locally and then gone back to the motel.

Before boarding the lift, they proceeded to the hotel bar and placed an order for a drink. Dunne went into the lift, too, reports Breaking News.

Dunne threatened to “rape her and kill him,” referring to her husband, according to Gda Lawlor. Then he started attacking her spouse after hitting the woman in the mouth. The panic button was pressed by the woman.

The woman yelled for help as the lift door opened, and two other people rushed to their aid.

The court was informed that blood was all over the place and that Dunne was continuously assaulting the man. Dunne persisted in declaring that he was “going to kill” the man while he was being restrained by bystanders. The man was trembling and dropped on his knees, reports Breaking News.

The emergency services treated the couple on the spot, but they didn’t need hospitalisation.

This was an unprovoked attack, the lady informed the gardaí. According to the court, this was the couple’s final night in Ireland; the next day, they left for the US. The court was given pictures of the wounds that both affected parties had received.

During the interview, Dunne denied assaulting either of the victims. His arrest dates back to April 2023. Although Dunne accepted a trial date, he entered a plea before the trial.

Dunne had not known the couple, and Gda Lawlor concurred with the defending attorney that this was a “frenzied attack,” reports Breaking News.
