Dublin man (35) charged after allegedly ‘choking’ his elderly mother

A 35-yr-old man has been denied bail after being accused of repeatedly striking and “choking” his 69-year-old mother using both hands while she was in bed, reports RTE.

Peter Dunne, residing in Scholarstown Wood, Rathfarnham, Dublin, was charged with causing harm through assault to his mother at their family residence last night.

He faced bail objections when he appeared before Judge Michele Finan at Dublin District Court this morning.

Garda Daniel Maloney stated that he and his colleagues responded to a 999 call around 10:40 PM and went to Mr. Dunne’s elderly parents’ home, reports RTE.

The report indicated that the accused allegedly attacked his mother while she was lying in bed.

He was arrested on-site.

The court heard that he “made no reply” when charged at Tallaght Garda station.

Defense attorney Eddie O’Connor mentioned that Mr. Dunne had no previous convictions or warrants and suggested that his client could reside at an alternate location and agree to stay away from his parents, reports RTE.

While giving evidence, the accused informed Judge Finan that he could stay in a hostel or a hotel, but when asked further, he admitted he had not made any arrangements. He assured the court he would not return to the residence and mentioned plans to see his GP, who is treating him for anxiety.

Mr. O’Connor requested Judge Finan to set bail with strict conditions. However, she rejected the request and ordered Mr. Dunne to remain in custody until receiving instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions, reports RTE.

Legal aid was granted to Mr. Dunne, who has yet to submit a plea; he is scheduled to appear in court again next week.

The judge also instructed that he receive psychiatric care while in custody, reports RTE.
