The Christmas Bonus for long-term recipients of social welfare is set to return this year, with payments expected within days. This lump-sum payment will be double the usual amount and is anticipated to reach approximately 1.3 million individuals, reports The Mirror.
During the October Budget announcement, Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys indicated that there will be a total of 10 cost of living payments made before Christmas. She stated, “I am pleased to announce today that this is the largest Social Protection Budget in the history of the State – featuring over €2.6 billion in measures designed to assist our pensioners, caregivers, individuals with disabilities, and working families.
“This Budget aims to provide people with a bit more financial support and to put money back in their hands. It underscores a strong commitment to supporting families throughout the State while addressing challenges such as child poverty. I am also revealing today a series of 10 one-off payments which will all be distributed before Christmas. These payments will deliver nearly €1.5 billion in assistance to individuals, alleviating the financial strain faced by many households,” reports The Mirror.
It has been confirmed that the Christmas Bonus will be disbursed next week, beginning on Monday, December 2. Qualifying individuals do not need to apply for the bonus; it will be automatically credited to them.
Some recipients may be eligible for a twofold Christmas Bonus and might not know it. If they receive more than one social welfare payment, they will receive a double payment for each one they qualify for. For instance, if someone is on the one-parent family payment as well as the domiciliary care allowance or a half-rate carer’s allowance, they will receive a Christmas Bonus for all applicable payments, reports The Mirror.
What exactly is the Christmas Bonus?
Citizens Information explains: “The Christmas Bonus is a one-time double week payment granted to those receiving long-term social welfare payments. There is no application process for the Bonus. Those who qualify will receive it automatically. The Christmas Bonus is scheduled to be distributed during the week commencing December 2, 2024, to those receiving qualifying social welfare payments. Typically, the Bonus is paid alongside your regular social welfare payment,” reports The Mirror.
