A man who committed a “egregious breach of the normal trust between a married couple” by repeatedly raping his unconscious wife with various household objects has been sentenced to 11 years in prison, reports RTE.
A jury last month convicted the 49-year-old Dublin man on 11 counts of molesting his wife in the family home on unspecified times between January 2005 and September 2014.
The jury in the first trial found the defendants not guilty on four charges and was unable to reach a consensus on the other counts, therefore a retrial was necessary before the judgements could be rendered.
The State argued that the now-50-year-old woman was not conscious and could not have consented to the rapes when her husband—who will remain anonymous—performed them.
He has never been convicted before.
“He changed my past, my present and my future,” she said, in her victim impact statement, reports RTE.
She said she had so many unanswered questions. “Why had he done this to me? How long had it been going on? How did I not know? Was he always this way?” reports RTE.
