Dublin woman gets jailed for aggravated burglary of elderly widower and robbing visually impaired man

For robbing a visually impaired man and viciously beating and breaking into the home of a 79-year-old widower in two different incidents that happened within hours of each other, a woman was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison, reports RTE.

In November 2018, Christine Ward, 36, of Little Britain Street, Dublin 7, entered a guilty plea to aggravated burglary at a residence in Artane, where the victim, an 84-year-old woman, was stabbed and attacked with a clawhammer.

Derek Bewley, her then-partner, entered a guilty plea to charges of having a hammer in his possession and taking a wallet that contained €600 during the same event, reports RTE.

In addition, the ex-couple admitted to stealing an iPhone from the 56-year-old man on North William Street a few hours prior.

Ward received a 10-year sentence from Judge Orla Crowe, with the last 18 months suspended.

She noted that this was a serious betrayal of trust towards the old man who had previously given Ward money on multiple occasions, as well as an offence against particularly vulnerable members of society, reports RTE.
